Fall colors are not just in the trees. Produce in season at local stands and markets this month:
Fruits: Apples, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupes, cucumbers, grapes, peaches, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon.
Vegetables: Beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cilantro, collards, sweet corn, dill, eggplant, endive and escarole, kale, leeks, lettuce, mustard greens, okra, onions, parsley, parsnips, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, radishes, spinach, squash, tomatoes, turnips.
Prodce Tip: Country markets and orchards abound with apple varieties, a contrast with the usual supermarket choices. Seek out varieties of tart, sweet, assertive, snacking and cooking styles.
